What is a half granny square actually used for?

It is a filler shape that solves the stepped, uneven edges you get when you join full granny squares. Slot a triangle into each notch along a blanket edge and the whole piece squares up into a clean straight line. It also shapes V-necks and armholes in granny tops and cardigans, turns corners on borders, and stacks into triangular shawls and bandanas

Can I make the triangle bigger than five rounds?

Absolutely — the pattern repeats indefinitely. Every round after the third follows the same logic: 3dc into each gap along the sides, 3dc + ch2 + 3dc into the single ch-2 space at the apex, and a final 3dc into the top of the previous round's ch3. Just keep repeating that round until the triangle reaches the size you want

Do I really have to turn my work every round?

Yes, if you are working in one colour and carrying the yarn up. Turning alternates the direction of each round, which balances the fabric and keeps both slanted edges straight rather than leaning off to one side. The single exception is a per-round colour change, where you fasten off and rejoin instead, and in that case you do not turn

Will this triangle really match a granny square I already made?

It will, as long as both are worked in the same yarn with the same hook and the same number of rounds. The half granny is built to exactly half the size of its full counterpart, so the long base of the triangle equals one side of the square. That is what lets the two shapes tile together with no gaps or puckering

Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of the fine cotton?

Yes, and it is a great choice for blankets. Pair worsted weight with a 5.00 mm hook and the finished triangle will be roughly double the measurements listed, with a softer, chunkier lattice. Just remember to make any matching squares in the same yarn and hook so the two shapes stay proportional to each other
